What is Sedation?

Sedation is a technique used to allow the patient to remain awake and breathe during a medical intervention. During sedation, the patient is given sedative and anxiolytic medications, which keep the patient calm and relaxed. This technique is also frequently used in dental practices and reduces patients’ fear and anxiety towards the dentist.

Sedation allows the patient to remain comfortable and alert, while also preventing him from feeling pain during the procedure. For this reason, sedation is used for longer-term interventions, such as longer-term dental procedures. It may also be beneficial for patients who tend to postpone dental procedures due to sedation, physical disability, fear, or other reasons.

Sedation can be applied at different levels. The lightest type of sedation keeps the patient alert and aware but reduces anxiety and stress. A deeper sedation ensures that the patient is not awake or moving during the procedure. The deepest type of sedation puts the patient completely asleep and is not generally used in dental procedures.

The biggest advantage of sedation is that the patient feels less anxiety and stress. Additionally, it is suitable for longer-term procedures and prevents the patient from feeling pain. However, sedation also has some risks. These risks may include low blood pressure, breathing problems, and allergic reactions. Therefore, it is important to consider the patient’s health status and history before administering sedation.

What is Anesthesia?

It is a type of treatment used to reduce or eliminate pain and discomfort during dental operations. The anesthetic drugs used during this procedure numb the tooth with regional anesthesia methods. Thus, pain, discomfort, stress and feelings of fear are minimized, making the treatment more convenient and comfortable.

Anesthesia is frequently preferred, especially in procedures such as tooth extractions, root canal treatment and implant treatment. Dentists take care to administer anesthesia to reduce patients’ feelings of pain, discomfort and fear. At the same time, anesthesia allows patients to be calmer and more comfortable during treatment, so dentists can complete their work more easily.

Anesthesia methods frequently used in dentistry include local anesthesia, general anesthesia and sedation. Local anesthesia is an anesthesia method applied directly to the anesthetized area. General anesthesia is a method in which the patient is completely put to sleep and is preferred in more serious surgical procedures. Sedation is a method that ensures that the patient is in a kind of sleep state and is frequently used in the treatment of pediatric patients in dentistry.
